Gender roles, Marc Jacobs FW show, things I've purchased recently, annnnnnd never DM me asking what I'm wearing or where something is from without getting an answer again!
Ok just kidding I’m actually not going to get into gender roles here because there are so! many! links! and insights to share and I want to do so appropriately but…. are we all at the place yet where we recognize there is/we are living through a gender (role) crisis? I became *very* interested in this topic spring 2022— well actually my interest started with the debate whether or not monogamy is nAtUraL. As a very traditional romantic who teeters on (sometimes) being a cynical asshole under the guise of being realistic, I found myself conflicted and so down the rabbit hole I went. This article from Esther Perel really opened my mind up to the historical context of genders in a way I hadn’t thought of before. Snippet below.
Then there was this brilliant article by Christine Emba, which lead to me another great conversation with Richard Reeves which you can listen to here.
Anyway, I’ve been reading A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf and it has reignited all of these thoughts. To be continued.
Marc Jacobs SS24
When I first started writing this NYFW had just started and I was surprised by how disinterested I was. This made me kind of sad as there used to be a time when running to Vogue Runway (RIP style.com) to see the new collections was one of my favorite things to do, which brings me back to Marc Jacobs. Marc Jacobs is still the only show that actually got me to go to Vogue.com. His iconicness just is but to be honest his shows have never really struck a cord with me (although I did just quickly look at Fall 2020 and I really love too). I think when everyone’s obsessed with something my brain just completely blocks it out i.e. his fashion shows (fashion shows at large to be honest), the super high platform shoes, etc etc. This is an annoying quality of mine I know, but I think it has to do with this, and the lack of original thought out there on the (fashion/style) streets. I think what I loved about this collection is that it all feels like more exaggerated, richer versions of things I already own and wear or want to. The silhouettes, the weight of the fabrics, the cuts— it’s all pretty practical yet surreal in their execution. The fact that the richness of materials translates through a computer screen… chef’s kiss. I hope to wear some of the below in the future.
As far as the rest of fashion month goes and from what I’ve seen on IG so far, I also really love Gucci, I need to look at Prada and am very excited for Miu Miu (while also fearful of those who are starting to bastardize it).
My relation to the fashion world these days feels very influx. I hate it until I catch myself really enjoying getting dressed and just naturally getting a fit off as the kids say these days. The truth is I am good at getting dressed and I don’t know why I avoid stepping more into the the things that feel good, no matter how trivial. Which brings me to……*drum roll*…
