On my mind and in my cart, 09 18 24
Random stream of consciousness I had this morning, live and direct from my bath. Kind of feel like Russell Simmons, kind of just think I'm becoming English.
I like Nensi Dojaka for Calvin Klein. Beyond feeling proud of my friends that worked on this and thinking how cool that is in itself, I think Nensi was a great choice for an otherwise pretty androgynous brand. To be honest I haven’t even looked at the full collection I just like that it is sexy and that CK chose to go in this direction.
Sexy in a tasteful way and not the over-sexualized OD lips / make up / naked dressing all over Instagram “sexy” we’ve come to know. I think our world needs to get sexier and more elegant.
There’s an opportunity for it. Not (not) in the business sense, but more so spiritually and culturally. The world needs to be more romantic.
Ugh I can already see the tiktoks now — “romanticize your life!!!” Or did that happen already? I hate this corner of the internet. It’s cheap. It’s desperate. I tried to think of gentler words but somethings just are what they are.
Why do we love making everything a *thing*?
Why can’t we let things simply just…be?
Don’t more people know about this unspoken universal truth?
If you appreciate something, you take care of it and nurture it. Whether it be a t-shirt, a brand, a talent— you take care of it / them. You do what is necessary to keep the thing in question alive, inadvertently growing their life span and increasing their value in your own life.
It’s always more devastating when you have to get rid of something because you’ve worn or used it to death than when you lose it.
Inevitably— naturally, these things (ideas, people, products, businesses) tend to develop into something far greater than you could have ever conceptualized in a meeting room or through financial projections.
Why don’t we have the patience to let things be? Why do we run to monetize anything and everything as quickly as possible? I think we all know the answer is capitalism but (!) the reason why businesses are churning out things this way is because something is not working correctly (plus an overbearing scarcity mindset is definitely at play).
Why not try a different approach? Even if you don’t accept the above as truth, what would be the harm in testing this theory? Nowadays everyone is constantly doing damage control and/or complaining about how hard it is to survive in the fashion industry but not changing the way they do anything. This is actually one of my biggest pet peeves.
Why is everyone so risk adverse and scared to try something different?
This makes me think about Status Anxiety, The Surrender Experiment, and how the very essence of being female and being in your feminine energy is to just be. This was a very big learning that has become an undercurrent in my life the last three or so years.
The lack of this knowledge or perspective makes sense. We live in a patriarchy. We are dominated by male and male run businesses. For a very long time these have been our only visual representations of success. But even men have feminine energy and probably some of the best men you know are balancing or in tune with both.
One of my goal’s since this learning has been to balance out my feminine and masculine energies. Being in your masculine looks like problem solving, executing, getting shit done, being assertive, being in control, being (extremely) uncomfortable when not in control or dealing with uncertainties, etc., etc. It’s all about doing whereas being in your feminine is about being. There is a lot of power that comes from being in your feminine too— I know, a very hard concept to wrap your head around and embody (especially if you are a female) in 2024.
Being in your feminine looks like being really good at receiving. You are open to whatever comes your way, you allow others to help you (despite the fact you can do it yourself or don’t *need* help), you don’t get all weird and uncomfortable when someone gives you a compliment. You’re creative and resourceful and in tune with your intuition. You let it guide you and kind of just go with the flow knowing that everything is developing the way it’s meant to be. There is a larger conversation about spirituality that needs to be inserted here but my ADHD and my impatience are currently taking over and I feel badly that I haven’t published anything here in so long so I’m wrapping this vomit of thoughts up and circling back to the need for our world to get sexier.
I guess I see sexy as the most courageous, vulnerable form of romance.
Our world needs more courageous people, and we all benefit (personally and collectively) from being vulnerable.
I’d say this is a pretty good indication that the world will eventually catch up to this idea.
Going back to me saying there’s an opportunity for it, I mean the opportunity for growth. Personal (/spiritual) growth becomes community growth simultaneously becomes business and societal growth becomes collective growth becomes personal growth— its a cycle that will repeat itself as long as you keep tending to it and nurturing yourself along the way.
Just realizing that everything else I’ve liked so far this fashion month is sexy. Also realizing that it is probably not a coincidence how much I have been listening to Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift this week.
Love, love, love everything Alaïa has put out this month. Pieter Mulier is really killing it. I don’t know him but I feel so happy for him. This is a man who has been given the freedom and trust to thrive! Their latest campaign, and those floating wired dresses—
SEX. I.
The JW Anderson leather skirts.
I screenshotted a flurry of these looks immediately upon seeing them. All of these looks feel very me. The skirts remind me of my Jacquemus booty shorts I wear all the time.
Maybe not sexy but falls under the bucket of courage via independent thinking and doing things differently, Valentino announcing that they will only be doing one show a year
The Row’s recent fundraising news. More on this soon, but I enjoyed Lauren Sherman’s report on it.
These MNZ heels I have been eyeing for years and finally pulled the trigger. Here’s a fun pair in size 38, and there are a few more on sale on their site. Heels in general I am really into these days. I’ve been wearing a lot of them and I think part of the reason why I love London so much is the getting dressed up part and the nostalgic tug on my Miami girl heart strings.
These Celine sunglasses which I am embarrassed to say I have now bought three times.
My Kimai bracelet which I just had restrung with an off-white creamy cord. One day I was telling my friend Alissa behind High Sport the colors available and how I loved white but was scared of how dirty it might get and she was like what’s chicer than diamonds on a white string and well, here I am.
Ok bye now!
More vomiting of thoughts please! This was a delight to read Ty:)
yes and I’d argue Tibi is such a stand out in fashion right now with a strong community built on weekly IG Lives. The founder and creative director of 25+ years is not too important or cool to take time out of her schedule to sit down with her customers every week. They also only distribute to small businesses and Shopbop - that allows creative control to stay at the hands of designers and not the retailers based on buyer trends! Underrated brand fr
